Rewriting the Story of Birth: How Fear May Be Blocking Your Fertility

For many women, the journey to conception isn’t just about the physical aspects of fertility—it’s deeply tied to the stories and beliefs we hold about birth. Whether these come from our own birth experiences, the birth of our children (in cases of secondary infertility), or the sensationalised depictions of birth in the media, fear can become a significant block.

What Stories Are You Telling Yourself About Birth?

If you’ve ever thought, “Birth is unsafe” or “Birth is dangerous,” you’re not alone. These fears are deeply ingrained, often rooted in cultural narratives that depict birth as a traumatic, chaotic event. But as a doula, and as someone who has birthed my own two children, I’m here to offer a different perspective.

Birth can be orgasmic, beautiful, and blissful. Yes, it’s powerful and transformative, but it’s also a sacred journey—a mission to collect your child’s spirit from the stars. When you step over that threshold, you’ll return stronger, more embodied, and with a greater sense of self. Birth is a woman in her greatest power, a moment when she blooms fully.

The Problem with Media Depictions of Birth

Think about the way birth is portrayed in movies and TV shows. It’s often rushed, chaotic, and filled with screams—perhaps happening in the backseat of a taxi during a dramatic race to the hospital. This imagery, while entertaining, programs our minds to expect the worst.

But here’s the truth: put a woman in a darkened room, where she feels safe and supported, with her oxytocin flowing freely, and she will birth easily and effortlessly. Birth is not a medical emergency in most cases; it’s a natural process that unfolds beautifully when undisturbed.

How We Got Here: The Medicalisation of Birth

It’s only in the last 100 years that birth has been moved out of the home and into hospitals. The primary goal of hospitals is efficiency—getting women through labour as quickly as possible. This often leads to interventions that disrupt the natural process, from unnecessary inductions to routine use of epidurals and C-sections.

Yet, research shows that home births are safer than hospital births. Studies have also found that women who birth at home report higher levels of satisfaction, less need for pain relief, and fewer interventions.

Statistics to Inspire Confidence

Over 108 billion women are estimated to have birthed on Earth since the beginning of humanity. Birth is not new—it’s an ancient, primal process that women’s bodies are beautifully designed for.

• In the UK, data from the Birthplace Study shows that for low-risk pregnancies, home birth is safer than a hospital birth and results in fewer interventions.

Reclaiming Birth: An Empowered Perspective

Birth doesn’t have to be what we’ve been told. With the right support, preparation, and mindset, women can birth in their fabulousness—empowered, informed, and in tune with their bodies.

As a doula, I am rewriting the narrative around birth. I’ve seen how transformative and empowering it can be when women step into their birthing power. It’s a moment of pure strength, vulnerability, and beauty all at once.

What Beliefs Are You Holding About Birth?

If fear around birth is holding you back, perhaps it’s time to explore where these beliefs come from. What stories have you internalised about birth? Are they serving you, or are they creating a block in your fertility journey?

When your pregnancy does unfold, imagine stepping into birth ready and confident, knowing that it can be a beautiful experience. Birth is not something to fear—it’s a natural, powerful part of your evolution into motherhood.

It’s time to rewrite the story. Let’s shift the narrative and embrace birth for what it truly is: a sacred, transformative act of creation.

As you prepare for your journey to motherhood, remember that you have the power to approach birth with confidence and clarity. You are capable of birthing beautifully, on your own terms.

Let’s rewrite the story together.
